Physician Recruitment and Retention
The South Huron Medical Recruitment and Retention Committee was established in 2005 and is comprised of volunteer members from the municipality. The Committee, with the support of both the Municipal Council and the South Huron Hospital Association and its medical staff, works to promote and encourage physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals to consider a career in a rural setting through its attendance at medical job fairs and career expos.
The Committee plays a supporting role and partners with The Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry University of Western Ontario and South Huron Hospital Association and the Grand Bend and Area Community health Centre for Discovery Week. Four 1st year medical undergraduate students are provided with a hands-on opportunity through placements at the Family Practice Clinic, Physician Offices, complementary Health Care providers, South Huron Hospital Association and the Grand Bend CHC to see what rural health care is all about!!!
HealthKick Huron works with the Schulich School of Medicine with its “MedQuest” program which includes a week long camp open to senior high school students in Huron County who are considering a career in health care. This “camp” is co-ordinated through HealthKick and is a summer elective for 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, UWO. The Medical Recruitment and Retention Committee along with South Huron Hospital Association and the Grand Bend and Area Community Health Centre have been involved with MedQuest since its inception eight years ago!!!
Our goal for this next year will be to continue to promote the Municipality of South Huron at job fairs for physicians and allied health care professionals as THE place to live and work. In addition, we will also support both the “Discovery Week” and “MedQuest” programs as we see this as an opportunity to create that “first great impression” of medicine in a rural setting.
